Care For A Lifetime

Certified Nurse-Midwives and Your GYN Health

Many people associate Certified Nurse-Midwives with prenatal, childbirth and postpartum care, but they also apply their unique philosophy of care to women across the lifespan. CNMs provide gynecological care starting in adolescence and continue all the way through to and including the menopausal phase of life.

Midwifery care focuses on health promotion and maintenance and encourages women to be partners in their care. Informed choices are made based on each individual’s unique physical and emotional needs, and each midwife will take the time to listen to you and answer your questions.

GYN care provided by CNMs includes taking a family and medical history, providing a complete physical examination, screening, diagnosis and treatment of various disorders, conditions, or infections, prescribing contraception, antibiotics, as well as other therapies as needed. Midwives may also be trained in various procedures such as colposcopy (follow up for abnormal pap smears) endometrial biopsy, IUD placement, and first assisting with a physician during a cesarean section. If a condition develops that requires further investigation, you will be referred to a gynecologist or other specialists as needed.

CNMs are independent providers of high quality, safe health care services both in maternity care and gynecology. Through years of experience, and continuing education throughout their careers, they are able to provide a compassionate, individualized, comprehensive approach to women’s health care. Most CNMs graduate at the Master’s Degree level, and the profession is regulated at two different levels. Licensing occurs at the state level, and is subject to individual state laws. Certification is done through a national organization and all states have the same requirements for professional practice standards.

U.S. government studies, medical journals, and health care organizations continue to recognize and recommend the health care services provided by Certified Nurse-Midwives.
